MARTHE KELLER

fold color replay

AT ROSENBERG + KAUFMAN FINE ART

30 WEST 57TH STREET

Rosenberg + Kaufman Fine Art at 30 West 57th Street is very pleased to present fold color replay, a painting installation by noted New York artist Marthe Keller, running from Thursday, November 8 through Saturday, December 8, 2001. There will be a reception for the artist on Saturday, November 10, from 5-7PM

The installation includes a 30 foot long un-stretched canvas tarp, painted with a variety of techniques, and which is designed to make real space demands on the viewer -- nothing in these works appears entirely fixed. Continuous shifting of perception is important to Keller, as she challenges the idea of a single stance: the viewer is provoked into moving around, side to side and back and forth. According to the artist: "I make my own yoked-together brushes to multiply each stroke¡ each having it's own specific quality yet having no unique identity. By means of repetition and transfer I remove authorial presence and expressivity associated with the brush mark, imprinting and blotting¡ reducing it to a trace. The multiplied strokes, prints and smears become oscillating pulses holding open a series of vertical slits."

Marthe Keller, one of the most¡ highly regarded abstract artists working today, has been exhibiting her work throughout the United States and Europe since the mid-1970's. Consistently well reviewed, her work is included in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, The Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum, The New Jersey State Museum and The Whitaker Foundation in Italy as well as numerous other public and private collections in the U.S. and Europe.

Concurrent with this exhibition, Marthe Keller's painting, Diva, is currently on view in the contemporary wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday 11AM-5:30PM and by appointment. For press

kits, additional information and images, please contact Fran Kaufman at (212) 431-4838 or (212) 757-7401.
