My Life in the Wake

My reiterated motif is the paint stroke and the many ways its meaning is revised by my physical idiosyncrasies. Like steady breathing interrupted by a hiccup. Or like the phenomenon of the steady tempo of passing through shadows on a tree lined street causing photosensitivity seizures.

Repetition gives the work life and breath, opening the space of painting against banal gesture. My awkward tools disable stylish mastery with the accidents of my reach and touch. To dislodge my paintings from a fixed stance, I count on chance. I use prints, strokes, drips, smears and gaps found in the studio process and pinch “ready-made” painting titles from James Joyce’s neverending Finnegan’sWake. There’s no end. Don’t get me started!
